{"id":61,"date":"2008-03-10T20:30:35","date_gmt":"2008-03-10T20:30:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lakeandhomes.com\/blog\/?p=61"},"modified":"2010-11-30T20:32:49","modified_gmt":"2010-11-30T20:32:49","slug":"an-old-ladys-poem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lakeandhomes.com\/blog\/an-old-ladys-poem\/","title":{"rendered":"An Old Lady&#8217;s Poem"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What do you see, nurses, what do you see?<br \/>\nWhat are you thinking when you&#8217;re looking at me?<br \/>\nA crabby old woman, not very wise,<br \/>\nUncertain of habit, with faraway eyes?<br \/>\nWho dribbles her food and makes no reply&#8221;&#8221;<br \/>\nWho seems not to notice the things that you do,<br \/>\nAnd forever is losing a stocking or shoe&#8230;.<br \/>\nWho, resisting or not, lets you do as you will,<br \/>\nWith bathing and feeding, the long day to fill&#8230;.<br \/>\nThen open your eyes, nurse; you&#8217;re not looking at me.<br \/>\nI&#8217;ll tell you who I am as I sit here so still,<br \/>\nAs I do at your bidding, as I eat at your will.<br \/>\nI&#8217;m a small child of ten&#8230;with a father ! and mother,<br \/>\nBrothers and sisters, who love one another.<br \/>\nA young girl of sixteen, with wings on her feet,<br \/>\nDreaming that soon now a lover she&#8217;ll meet.<br \/>\nA bride soon at twenty&#8211;my heart gives a leap,<br \/>\nRemembering the vows that I promised to keep.<br \/>\nAt twenty-five now, I have young of my own,<br \/>\nWho need me to guide and a secure happy home.<br \/>\nA woman of thirty, my young now grown fast,<br \/>\nBound to each other with ties that should last.<br \/>\nAt forty, my young sons have grown and are gone,<br \/>\nBut my man&#8217;s beside me to see I don&#8217;t mourn.<br \/>\nAt fifty once more, babies play around my knee,<br \/>\nAgain we know children, my loved one and me.<br \/>\nDark days are upon me, my husband is dead;<br \/>\nI look at the future, I shudder with dread.<br \/>\nFor my young are all rearing young of their own,<br \/>\nAnd I think of the years and the love that I&#8217;ve known.<br \/>\nI&#8217;m now an old woman&#8230;.and nature is cruel;<br \/>\nTis jest to make old age look like a fool.<br \/>\nThe body, it crumbles, grace and vigor depart,<br \/>\nThere is now a stone where I once had a heart.<br \/>\nBut inside this old carcass a young girl still dwells,<br \/>\nAnd now and again my battered heart swells.<br \/>\nI remember the joys, I remember the pain,<br \/>\nAnd I&#8217;m loving and living life over again.<br \/>\nI think of the years&#8230;.all too few, gone too fast,<br \/>\nAnd accept the stark fact that nothing can last.<br \/>\nSo open your eyes, nurses, open and see,<br \/>\n&#8230;Not a crabby old woman; look closer&#8230;see ME!!<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What do you see, nurses, what do you see?
